- The two teams opened the game in a defensive battle with VCU leading just 2-1 before a McDonell goal with 12:33 left in the first half ignited a VCU run
- McDonnell's goal started an 8-1 run by the Rams over the final 12:33 of the first half and gave VCU a 10-2 lead at halftime
- The Rams scored four unanswered goals to open the second half and pushed their lead to 14-2 with 17:42 remaining
- VCU led by as much as 18-4 with 3:35 remaining but Gardner-Webb scored the game's final two goals in the final minute
