The short story: Senior catcher
Josh Simon homered and drove in a pair, but VCU dropped a 10-inning heartbreaker Sunday in its series finale at Elon.
Â
LEADING OFF
- Simon finished 2-for-4, including his first home run of the season. He reached base three times
- Junior designated hitter Liam Hibbits also hit a two-run home for the Black and Gold
- VCU junior centerfielder Hogan Brown collected a pair of base hits, drove in one, and stole his third base of the season
- Senior righthander Justin Sorokowski made his second start of the season and allowed two runs in four innings of work for the Rams. He struck out two
THE DIFFERENCE
- Elon's Anthony Galason doubled to right center field with one out in the 10th to score Connor Offshack and move the Phoenix into the win column
- VCU plated three in the top half of the eighth to pull even with Elon at 7-7. With two out, junior left fielder Jack Shroeder and Simon drew back-to-back walks and later scored on an Elon throwing error. Brown followed with a single through the left side to score freshman shortstop Connor Hujsak
- The Rams briefly took a 4-2 lead in the top of the sixth when Hibbits launched a two-run, two-out homer, the 10th of his career. Simon followed three batters later with an RBI single
- The Phoenix collected 13 hits on the afternoon
- Elon's Joe Sprake picked up the win after he faced the minimum in the ninth and 10th
NOTABLE
- Hibbits leads VCU with five RBIs this year; After a slow start in 2020's pandemic-shortened season, Hibbits is batting .333 in 2021
- Brown is batting .350 through the first two weeks of this season
