The short story: VCU freshman third baseman Tyler Locklear ripped a go-ahead double, and the Rams' pitching staff combined to shut down Elon in Game Two, as VCU earned a doubleheader split Saturday at Elon.

GAME ONE RECAP – Elon 7, VCU 6
FIRST PITCH
  • VCU freshman shortstop Connor Hujsak doubled, drove in a run and finished 2-for-4 at the plate
  • Rams' senior starter Michael Dailey tossed 5.2 innings and scattered four hits. He allowed two runs and struck out four
  • Junior left fielder Jack Schroeder hit 2-for-4 with a double and a single for VCU. He also scored a run
  • Junior Liam Hibbits stroked a two-run, pinch-hit double for the Black and Gold
THE DIFFERENCE
  • Elon's Anthony Galason hit a two-run, walk-off homer in the bottom of the ninth to give the Phoenix the win
  • Trailing by a run after three, VCU chipped away with a run in each of the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to take a 3-1 lead; Elon tied the game at three in the bottom of the sixth behind a pair of back-to-back RBI singles
  • Hibbits broke a 3-3 tied in the top of the eighth when he drove the ball to left field for a two-run double. Hujsak scored Hibbits with a single to left center in the next at-bat for a 6-3 VCU lead
  • Elon redshirt-freshman Willie Haven cut into the Rams' lead with a solo homerun to begin the bottom half of the eighth. The Phoenix tacked on another run later in the frame
  • The Rams recorded nine hits in the game, including three doubles
GAME TWO RECAP – VCU 4, Elon 3

  • In the next at bat, Locklear crushed a ball to deep left field to score Carpenter for the eventual game-winning run; Husjak began the two-out rally with an RBI single through the left side of the infield that drove in junior Hunter Vay
  • Davis took the mound in the sixth inning and held the Phoenix scoreless for the remainder of the game
