Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

RAMS COME UP SHORT IN SEASON OPENER

Final Score: N.C. State 1, VCU 0
Location: Richmond, Va. (Sports Backers Stadium)
Records: VCU (0-1-0), N.C. State (2-6-1)

The Short Story: The Rams dominated possession in the second half, but it was not enough to overcome the 1-0 deficit to N.C. State Wednesday night at Sports Backers Stadium.

QUICK FACTS:

  • Senior defender Ulrik Edvardsen and redshirt-junior Fiorre Mane each registered two shots for the Rams
  • VCU took eight corner kicks to N.C. State's four
  • Rams attackers Biska Biyombo and Celio Pompeu each placed one shot on target
  • The Rams registered one more shot attempt than the Wolfpack
  • N.C. State placed three of their shots on target compared to VCU's two
  • Each team came away with two saves

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • In the 41st minute, N.C. State midfielder Tal Segev looped an in-swinging corner kick directly into the goal. The 1-0 advantage would prove to be all the Wolfpack needed to secure a victory
  • In the second half the Rams enjoyed most of the ball. Their pressure was highlighted by a flurry of quality scoring chances around 70th minute. Edvardson was denied by the post, while sophomore Celio Pompeu's effort on goal was denied by N.C. State goalkeeper Leon Krapf
  • The Rams continued to press toward goal deep into the 90 minutes as Mane sailed an 85th minute header over the crossbar

HEAD COACH DAVE GIFFARD

"I'll start off by saying that in this crazy year, we are blessed to finally be able to play a real game for the first time since November of 2019.

In regards to the game tonight, although I was disappointed not to at least get the goal back in the 2nd half, I was pleased with our progression throughout the 90 minutes.  This is a very talented and dangerous team that just needs to play games and learn the things that only games can teach you. I thought we learned a ton tonight, just as we did in the 60 minutes we got against Georgetown. We'll look at the video, and hopefully learn even more as a group the next few days. With any luck, we'll get to play another game this weekend and try to put those things into practice."
