The Short Story: VCU led ECU 49-45 early in the fourth quarter before utilizing a dominant 16-3 scoring run over the final 8:56 of the game to pull away from East Carolina.
 
OPENING TIP:
  • Taya Robinson paced the Rams with 17 points, going 4-of-5 from 3-point range. She is 11-of-20 from deep across her last three games
  • Chloe Bloom chipped in 14 points, shooting an efficient 6-of-12 from the field, and tied for the team-high with seven rebounds
  • Janika Griffith-Wallace scored 11 points and grabbed seven rebounds
  • Grace Hutson was the fourth Ram in double figures as she set a new career high with 10 points along with two rebounds
  • VCU held a 13-2 advantage in second chance points over the pirates
  • The Rams shot a blistering 8-of-12 (66.7%) from 3-point range while ECU was just 4-of-10 (40%)

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • VCU started the contest on a 6-0 run, spearheaded by back-to-back 3-pointers from Robinson and Madison Hattix-Covington
  • The Rams led 21-17 at the end of the first quarter, having shot 63.6 percent from the field and 83.3 percent from three
  • Both teams struggled offensively in the second quarter and shot under 37 percent from the floor but VCU led 33-29 at halftime
  • VCU pushed its lead to 36-29 on a Bloom free throw but the Pirates answered with a 11-3 run to take a 40-39 lead with 3:05 left in the third quarter
  • Chloe Bloom then made a contested layup with 2:51 left in the third quarter that sparked a 7-2 scoring run for the Rams and gave them a 46-42 lead heading into the fourth quarter
  • VCU's 16-3 scoring run was sparked by a Robinson turnaround jumpshot as the Rams allowed just one field goal by the Pirates for the final 8:50 of action
