THE SHORT STORY
VCU was unable to overcome an early deficit and ultimately fell 4-2 to Jacksonville Saturday afternoon.
LEADING OFF
- Four Rams recorded hits on the afternoon.
- Jack Schroeder delivered a pinch-hit single for VCU's only extra-base hit.
- Devin Dunn threw 2.1 innings of scoreless relief work for the Rams
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Jacksonville got out to a quick start taking a 2-0 lead in the first inning and increased its lead 3-0 in the bottom of the third.
- Dunn relieved starting pitcher Mason Delane in the top of the fourth and kept the Dolphins off the board for 2.1 innings to keep things close for the Rams.
- The Rams cut into the Dolphins' lead 3-1 in the top of the fifth. Logan Amiss lead off the inning with a walk and then designated hitter, Liam Hibbits delivered VCU's first hit with a single through the right side. Steven Carpenter eventually picked up the RBI when he sent a sacrifice fly to left field to score the run.
- After a scoreless sixth inning, VCU cut the lead to just a run in the top of the seventh. Pinch hitter Josh Simon reached first base on the first pitch of the inning when he wore a pitch. Jack Schroeder then delivered a pinch-hit double down the left line to put runners on second and third. Simon eventually scored on a JU passed ball to cut the lead 3-2.
- Jacksonville answered in the bottom of the seventh and got a run back for a 4-2 lead.
- VCU was unable to plate a run in the final two innings, falling 4-2 to Jacksonville.
