FIVE STUDENT-ATHLETES EARN A-10 ALL-ROOKIE HONORS

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Five VCU Women's Track & Field student-athletes garnered Atlantic 10 All-Rookie team honors as announced by the conference on Monday afternoon.

Freshman Rorie Spencer's performance in the 60-meter sprint this season earned her a spot on the All-Rookie team. The Abington, Pa. native has had several strong performances in this event during her first year with the Rams, including a third place finish in the race at the A-10 Indoor Championships. Spencer clocked a time of 7.66, which is the fastest of all freshmen in the league.

On Jan. 28, freshman Syvanna Metcalfe earned her first A-10 honor when she was named A-10 Rookie of the Week after completing the 60-meter hurdles in 8.76 at the VMI Team Challenge. Since then, the freshman earned the selection to the All-Rookie team after placing fifth in the 60-meter hurdles at the A-10 Indoor Championships with a time of 8.67. Metcalfe is ranked fourth in the conference for this event, which leads all freshmen.

Khaila Lyons, a jumper from Woodbridge, Va., garnered the selection after placing fifth in the high jump at the A-10 Indoor Championships with a leap of 1.65m. Lyon's personal best is the highest mark among all freshmen in the conference, and placed her fifth overall in the A-10.

Another jumper for VCU, Raquel Hawkins, was also selected to the All-Rooke team. Hawkins has been a dominant presence in the triple jump this season, earning four top-five finishes in the event. The Norfolk, Va. native won the triple jump at the Carolina Challenge and placed fourth in the event at the A-10 Indoor Championships. The freshman's best leap of 12.18m was achieved at the Darius Dixon Memorial Invite on Feb. 15 and still stands as the highest jump of any freshmen in the A-10 for this event.

Newcomer Jocelyn Midkiff rounds out the All-Rookie selections for the Rams. The freshman thrower placed sixth in the shot put at the A-10 Indoor Championships with a personal best toss of 13.18. Her mark was the furthest of all freshmen in the competition. Midkiff's throw earned her a seventh place spot in the league and leads all freshmen in the A-10 for this event.
