THE SHORT STORY
The Rams erupted for 20 runs on 18 hits Saturday afternoon to defeat Georgetown 20-6 at The Diamond.
LEADING OFF
- Nine different Rams recorded hits on the afternoon, with five multi-hit performances.
- Paul Witt had four hits, including two doubles and an RBI.
- Tyler Locklear also had an impressive game, going 3-for-5 with a single, double and triple.
- Starting pitcher, Mason Delane threw 3.0 scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and fanned eight.
- Jack Masloff earned his first collegiate win Saturday. He threw 2.2 innings of scoreless baseball and struck out seven.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Rams wasted little time getting to the Georgetown starting pitcher. The first three batters, Witt, Locklear and Liam Hibbits all doubled, giving VCU a quick 2-0 lead. Taking advantage of a walk, error and fielders' choice later in the inning, The Rams held 4-0 lead.
- VCU added three more runs to its total in the bottom of the second. Brett Norwood lead off the inning with a base knock that Witt followed up with his double of the day. With two runners on, Locklear pounded a triple to right center field to put the Rams ahead 6-0. Brandon Henson got in on the action and delivered an RBI single through the left side to extend the lead 7-0 after two innings.
- VCU scored one run in the bottom of the third after Schroeder doubled and scored on an error for an 8-0 lead.
- Delane kept things scoreless on the mound through three innings, retiring eight Hoyas via punch out.
- The offensive momentum stayed in VCU's favor in the bottom of the fourth when Henson hammered a leadoff home run. The Rams scored once more after hits by Steven Carpenter and Schroeder for a 10-0 lead.
- Georgetown was able to cut into VCU's lead 10-4 in the top of the fifth.
- For the fifth straight inning, VCU put runs on the board, taking advantage of Georgetown defensive mistakes for a 12-4 lead.
- The Rams continued to pour it on, with four more runs in the bottom of the sixth to extend its lead 16-4.Norwood got the inning going with a single through the right side that was followed by a couple Georgetown errors and a Henson single to drive the runs home.
- The Hoyas scored two more runs on three hits in the top of the eighth to cut VCU's lead 16-6.
- VCU capped off its spectacular offensive performance in the bottom of the eighth with four more runs. Brett Willett reached on an error before a walk and a hit batsman loaded the bases for Nic Ericsson. He delivered a base-clearing double to tally three more runs. An RBI single from Witt capped off the day's runs for VCU, giving the Rams a 20-6 lead.
- Brooks Knapek threw the final inning for VCU, retiring the Hoyas in order to secure the win.
