THE SHORT STORY

Strong pitching performances and a big day at the plate by Hogan Brown led VCU to a 6-1 victory over Sacred Heart Sunday to secure the series victory.

LEADING OFF

  • Brown went 3-for-4 with a three-run home run.
  • The Rams' pitching staff struck out 14 batters on the day.
  • Danny Watson picked up his second victory of the weekend, throwing 2.1 scoreless innings with 5 punch outs.
  • Tyler Locklear picked up VCU's only other hit of the day with a single to left field.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Pioneers took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first after a leadoff hit came around to score.
  • The Rams quickly knotted things back up in the home half of the inning. Paul Witt put the tying run aboard when he was hit by a pitch. After he advanced to third thanks to a Pioneers error and a balk, Tyler Locklear delivered a sacrifice fly to tie things, 1-1.
  • VCU took the lead in the bottom of the third on a Hogan Brown long ball. With runners on first and second, Brown blasted a 2-out, full-count pitch past the right-center field fence to give the Rams a 4-1 lead.
  • Starting pitcher, Justin Sorokowski threw four innings, allowing no earned runs and just three hits. He also struck out four.
  • Jaden Griffin and Danny Watson combined for four innings out of the bullpen and struck out 10 batters, including nine consecutive outs by strikeout spanning from the fifth through seventh innings.
  • The Rams tacked on another couple of runs in the bottom of the seventh to extend the lead to 6-1. Steven Carpenter led off the inning by working a walk which was followed up by two more free passes. With the bases loaded and no outs, Paul Witt delivered a sacrifice fly to score a run before Young scored on a wild pitch.
  • Evan Chenier threw VCU's final inning on the mound, allowing no hits to finish off the Pioneers.
