THE SHORT STORY
The Rams fought until the bitter end, but ultimately fell 5-4 to Charlotte in extra innings Saturday night in Charlotte.
LEADING OFF
- For the second-consecutive night, the Rams registered double-digit hits with 10 on Saturday.
- Michael Dailey threw four innings and gave up just one earned run. He also struck out four.
- Logan Amiss lead the way offensively with two hits and two runs.
- Hunter Vay also had a productive night at the plate with two RBI.
- It took 11 innings to decide the winner after the Rams tied the game in the bottom of the ninth.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Rams took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second. Logan Amiss got things going with a single that was followed by a walk to put two on. Hunter Vay then barreled an RBI double to right field that scored two.
- Charlotte chipped away at the lead with a run each in the third and fourth to tie the game 2-2.
- After two innings of scoreless baseball, the 49ers took its first lead of the series (3-2) in the bottom of the seventh when it scored on a sacrifice fly.
- With three outs left to tie the game up, the Rams dug in and tied things 3-3 in the top of the ninth. Steven Carpenter knocked a two-out single to drive a run home to force the bottom of the ninth.
- In the bottom of the ninth, Danny Watson returned to the mound and put another zero on the board to force extra innings.
- VCU threatened in the top of the 10th when it put runners on first and second with no outs, but a runner thrown out at home plate stifled the Rams' attack.
- Charlotte threatened in the bottom of the 10th with the winning run in scoring position, but Watson came up with a big strikeout to end the inning.
- The Rams finally found the go-ahead run in the top of the 11th. Brett Young led off the inning with a pinch-hit double and eventually scored after a sacrifice bunt by Josh Simon and an RBI from Brett Norwood.
- The 49ers ended the game in the bottom of the 11th with a bases loaded hit to score two runs and defeat the Rams 5-4.
