The short story: Freshman Paola Exposito Diaz-Delgato won her team-leading 17th singles match of the season as top-seeded VCU cruised past eighth-seeded Fordham in the Atlantic 10 Conference Championship Quarterfinals Thursday in Orlando, Fla.
OPENING SERVE
- Diaz-Delgato was largely unchallenged in her singles match against Tatiana Grigoryan on the No. 2 court, forging ahead for a 6-1, 6-1 triumph.
- VCU also received singles win on the No. 4 court from sophomore Noumea Witmus, 6-0, 6-2 over Gianna Insogna.
- Freshman Sofia Sualehe improved to 4-3 on the No. 6 court for VCU this spring when she topped Whitney Weisberg in straight sets. Sualehe is 9-8 overall in her debut season.
- Sualehe also provided a doubles victory for the Black & Gold. She teamed with Marina Alcaide Bakkari for a 6-2 win over Grigoryan and Carolina Sa on the No. 3 court.
UP NEXT
VCU advances to the A-10 Semifinals, where it will meet the winner of the Duquesne/Richmond match on Saturday, April 28 at 1 p.m. VCU owns a 4-3 win over Richmond earlier this season.
