The short story: Justin Tillman poured in a career-high 28 points, including 21 in the first half, and De'Riante Jenkins sparked a VCU rally with a personal 8-0 in the second half as VCU overtook rival Old Dominion Saturday night.
OPENING TIP
- Tillman's career-high 28 points was on 10-of-13 from the floor and 4-of-5 from 3-point range. He also added six rebounds.
- Jenkins scored 23 points along with six boards and four assists.
- Jonathan Williams had 18 points and nine assists, with 16 of those points coming in the second half.
- Randy Haynes led ODU with 18 points along with five boards. B.J. Stith added 10 points and a team-high eight rebounds.
THE DIFFERENCE
- VCU turned a 59-48 deficit into a 65-61 lead after a 17-2 run, including the 8-0 personal run by Jenkins, gave the Rams the lead for good.
- During the run, the Rams held the Monarchs without a made field goal for almost 10 minutes as ODU's Porter hit a jumper with 11:06 left in the second half and didn't make another until Porter scored again on a layup with 1:20 left in the game.
- The Rams went 20-of-25 from the free throw line while ODU went 6-of-7.
- VCU also made 10-of-19 from 3-point range while the Monarchs were 5-of-9. Tillman and Jenkins combined to go 8-of-11 from deep for the Rams.
- VCU also earned points at the free throw line shooting 84.6 percent in the second half (16-of-19).
