The Short Story: The VCU Rams and Akron Zips had multiple chances to each score and take home a victory on Tuesday night. However, neither team would find the back of the net, as the two squads would battle to a scoreless draw after a double overtime effort. For the Black and Gold, Jorge Herranz led the team with six shots on the night.

QUICK FACTS

  • Goalkeeper Pierre Gardan turned in his first shutout of the season, making five saves on the night in all 110 minutes of action.
  • VCU put up a total of 11 shots, with only three on net. The Rams also fell victim to three offsides.
  • Both sides combined for 27 fouls and seven yellow cards.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Rams got their first opportunity seven minutes in, as Jorge Herranz took a shot that sailed high of the net. The next VCU opportunity wouldn't come until the 26th minute.
  • Despite a push by Akron at the end of the first half, the Rams held down the fort and brought a 0-0 score into halftime.
  • The first 10 minutes of the second half saw the Zips put up some offensive pressure, but with nothing to show from their efforts.
  • The score would hold tight through the 90th minute, as both teams played to a 0-0 draw, requiring extra time.
  • VCU got one shot in overtime, coming from Herranz that went wide. With no scores between the two teams, the match went to a second overtime.
  • Santos had a shot with just over two minutes to play in the second overtime, as he looked like he might score
  • The Zips had a chance just moments later, as a breakaway shot from X went just wide of the far post, missing a chance at clinching victory for Akron.
  • With neither side able to put on one the back of the net through 110 minutes, the match would end in a 0-0 draw.

WHAT'S NEXT

VCU will return to action this Saturday, October 1, when they open up Atlantic 10 Conference play against George Mason at Sports Backers Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

COACH ON THE MATCH

"I was proud of the guys tonight for grinding out a point on the road against one of the nations top teams. I think we had one cross the line in the 2nd overtime to win it, but it was very hard to tell. In general, as we headed into this last week, if you would have told me we would get a win and two draws against ODU, SLU and Akron I would have said that was a solid week. In the end, we probably deserved 2 wins, but I like the mettle this team is showing and I like the fact that we kept our first clean sheet tonight. I was also very proud of the guys who were playing their third game in seven days for the fight everyone on the roster showed."
