The Short Story: Melvin Johnson and Korey Billbury combined for 25 points in their final home game and Mo Alie-Cox added 18 points and nine rebounds as VCU set up a showdown for the Atlantic 10 regular season title with a Senior Day win over Davidson Wednesday. The first-place Rams can win the A-10 title outright Saturday with a win at Dayton.

THE DIFFERENCE
  • The Rams locked down Davidson defensively, holding the league's leading scorer, Jack Gibbs to 18 points on 4-of-19 shooting. The Wildcats shot just .379 (22-of-58) from the floor overall.
  • VCU never trailed, but Davidson did close to within 56-51 with 4:47 remaining. The Rams promptly fed Alie-Cox for back-to-back scores. A pair of Johnson free throws moments later pushed VCU's lead to 62-53 with 3:14 left.
  • For the second time this season, VCU gouged Davidson in the paint. On Wednesday, that advantage was 46-30. Behind Alie-Cox and sophomore Justin Tillman, VCU shot .659 (27-of-41) on two-pointers.
  • VCU raced out to a 12-2 lead in the game as Davidson opened the contest 1-of-10 from the floor. The Rams led 34-23 at the break.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Alie-Cox scored his 18 points on 7-of-9 shooting. He added nine rebounds, four blocked shots and two steals.
  • Johnson, one of three Rams to reach double-digits, provided 16 points and four assists, while fellow senior Billbury supplied nine points and three boards.
  • Junior JeQuan Lewis played distributor, tossing around a team-high eight assists while also swiping a team-high three steals.
  • Tillman was 5-of-5 from the floor and finished with 11 points for the Rams.
NOTABLE
  • VCU will enter the final day of the regular season Saturday in control of its path to the A-10 regular season crown. With a win, the Rams would win the title outright. A number of tiebreaker scenarios would come into play otherwise.
  • Johnson and Billbury were honored in a pregame, Senior Day ceremony.
  • Davidson's 23 first-half points are tied for its fewest in any half this season.
  • VCU only sank one three-pointer all game, finishing 1-of-14.
WHAT'S NEXT
  • VCU will meet Dayton for Saturday at UD Arena at 8 p.m. That game will be televised by CBS Sports Network.
