The short story: Senior Olga Barshcheuskaya earned a hard-fought victory on the No. 1 singles court, and briefly tied the match, but Old Dominion used wins on the No. 2 and No. 4 courts to edge the Rams Saturday at Thalhimer Tennis Center.
OPENING SERVE
- Old Dominion raced out to a 2-0 advantage when it earned the doubles point, then followed with a triumph by Nikol Hristova over Darya Berezhnaya (6-2, 6-1) on the No. 2 court.
- But VCU freshman Sofia Segerfors knocked off Natalya Malenko 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) and Barshcheuskaya polished off Nataliya Vlasova in a 0-6, 7-5, 6-2 comeback win to even the match at 2-2. The Rams could get no closer.
- Janina Braun also picked up a 6-2, 6-2 win over Marjiana Novakovic on the No. 6 court.
- Barshcheuskaya was also a winner at doubles, pairing with Berezhnaya on the No. 1 court.
