The Short Story: VCU hit nine 3-pointers and senior Korey Billbury scored 18 of his 20 points in the first half as the Rams rolled past Saint Louis Saturday at the Stuart C. Siegel Center.
THE DIFFERENCE
- VCU knocked down 9-of-17 three-pointers in the opening period and forced 13 Saint Louis turnovers on the way to a 44-24 advantage.
- Billbury, who finished with 20 points, knocked down 7-of-8 from the field, including 4-of-5 from three, in the opening period to push the Rams in front.
- The Rams jumped to an early 14-3 lead, but Saint Louis pulled within 23-17 with 9:47 left in the half before VCU took control for good.
- Billbury ignited a 21-4 run with eight points, including back-to-back 3-pointers, as VCU pushed to a 44-21 lead with 46 seconds left in the half. The game was never in doubt again.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Billbury topped 20 points for the fourth time as a Ram. He also added four steals and was 8-of-11 from the field.
- Sophomore guard Jonathan Williams, making just the second start of his career, sparked VCU with 12 points, seven assists, four rebounds and two steals. He committed just one turnover.
- Sophomore Justin Tillman provided 12 points and 11 rebounds, most of it in the second half, to notch his fourt double-double of the season.
- VCU shot .517 (30-of-58) from the field in the game.
- The Rams forced 21 turnovers and outscored the Billikens 20-7 off giveaways.
- Jermaine Bishop led Saint Louis with 16 points.
NOTABLE
- VCU outrebounded Saint Louis 36-34. The Rams are 14-1 this season when they outrebound an opponent.
- Senior Melvin Johnson knocked down a pair of 3-pointers Saturday and now has 261 in his career. He needs nine more to pass B.A. Walker and become VCU's career leader in treys.
- Ironically, Johnson scored 11 points to move past Walker and into 13th on VCU's all-time scoring list with 1,484.
- VCU has won five straight over Saint Louis.
