Tossone, Rams take down Saint Francis, 2-1, in double overtime thriller

Box Score

The Basics

  • Score: VCU 2, Saint Francis 1 – Double OT
  • Records: VCU (3-6, 2-1 A10), SFU (4-4, 0-1 A10)
  • Location: Cary Street Field – Richmond, Va.
  • The Short Story: Sophomore Spencer Tossone scored with less than 30 seconds remaining in the second overtime period to give the VCU field hockey team a hard fought and thrilling Atlantic 10 conference win over Saint Francis, 2-1. Classmate Chessa Kownurko made 14 saves in her first collegiate start, while Jamee Albright scored her fourth goal of the year.
How It Happened
  • Tossone nearly put the Rams on front in the fourth minute as she lifted a shot over the defense, but it bounced off the post to keep the game scoreless.
  • SFU would turn up the pressure, earning six corners and ripping off seven shots in the first half, but Kownurko and the VCU defense would hold strong.
  • The Red Flash broke through in the 26th minute when Brianna Govia found Brea Seabrook on the right side of the circle for the game's first goal and a 1-0 lead.
  • VCU would answer right before the half as a scramble in front resulted in Albright's fourth goal of the year and freshman Lauren Kaup's first collegiate assist.
  • The teams would battle for possession in the second half, but neither threatened until late in the regulation when the Red Flash had two chances, but both were turned away to head to overtime.
  • In the first overtime, Kownurko was brilliant, registering four saves and keeping it tied up at 1-1.
  • With under five minutes left in the second overtime, Albright and freshman Emily McNamara teamed up to threaten on back-to-back occasions, but both times SFU came up with the stop.
  • As the game clocked clicked below 30 seconds, McNamara sped into the right side of the circle and sent a feed to Tossone, who buried a shot into the back of the cage for the thrilling victory.
What They Said
  • "I'm really proud of our team for grinding out a tough game from St Francis today. We threw some changes at our players today and they reacted well and played some nice hockey." – Head Coach Laura Baker
  • "Going into the second over time, I don't know why but I just had a feeling that I was going to put the ball in the net. It was unfortunate that it didn't go in sooner, but better late then never. Today's game was a tough one, but we as a team were able to pull out the win by working hard and not giving up. We were doing it for each other and that's what a real team is." - Spencer Tossone
  • "I think the best part of the game today was that we played like we practiced. There was composure and intensity simultaneously and everyone gutted it out until the end. It's always amazing to see the effort our team puts in even when there's no gas left in the tank." - Chessa Kownurko
