Rams blank Saint Louis, 1-0, in conference opener

Box Score

The Basics

  • Score: VCU 1, Saint Louis 0
  • Records: VCU (2-5), Saint Louis (0-9)
  • Location: SLU Athletics Complex – Saint Louis, Mo.
  • The Short Story: Senior goalkeeper Kendall Clifton notched eight saves to lead the VCU field hockey team to its first shutout of the season, 1-0 over Saint Louis in the conference opener for both teams. Freshman Emily McNamara scored her team leading fifth goal of the season for the Rams.
How It Happened
  • VCU went on the attack early, earning three corners in the first 3:30, but all three times the Billikens were able to stifle the opportunity and keep the game scoreless.
  • That's when Clifton went to work, turning away SLU five different times in the first half to keep the game knotted at 0-0.
  • With less than two minutes remaining in the first half, VCU earned a corner and McNamara blasted one home after being set up by senior Taleah Scott and junior McKenzie Bowler to give the Black & Gold a 1-0 advantage at the break.
  • SLU would continue their attack in the second half, but Clifton and the VCU defense continue to thwart any scoring chance to keep the Rams' lead at one.
  • McNamara and her teammates would try to find some insurance goals late, firing off four shots in the final five minutes, but all of them were turned away as the Rams went on to seal the 1-0 victory.
What They're Saying
  • "I'm pleased with our result today. Saint Louis played a tough 70 minutes, but I'm proud of the way we battled to pull out the win. We achieved our main goal today with the win and also saw much improvement from our past couple of games." – Head Coach Laura Baker
