Rams Battle Penn to 1-1 Draw

Box Score

The Basics

  • Score: VCU 1, Penn 1
  • Records: VCU (1-6-1), Penn (4-4-1)
  • Location: Philadelphia, Pa.
  • The Short Story: Freshman Julia Suarez scored her first collegiate goal and senior Emma Kruse made eight saves as the VCU women's soccer team earned the draw against a tough Penn club.

How It Happened

  • Suarez found the net with a snipe from the corner just over two minutes into the match to give VCU the 1-0 lead.
  • The Black and Gold defense held stout before relenting the equalizer minutes before the break.
  • VCU's defense refused to break, shutting down the Quaker attack the rest of the way.
  • The Rams had nearly scored the game winner with a barrage of shots in double overtime, but were unable to do so, earning their first tie of the 2015 campaign.

How It Happened

  • "Tonight was a good step in the right direction. We showed heart, resilience, and greater attention to detail than we have shown all year. Megan Dell played extremely well in the back for us. And Sharon, while not as clean as she typically is, controlled the midfield for us. We tied a good Penn side today and I am proud of the progress we are making. On to Sunday." - Head Coach Lindsey Martin
