Rams battle William & Mary to scoreless draw in exhibition opener

Quick Hits

  • Score: VCU 0, William & Mary 0 – Final (exhibition)
  • Location: Albert-Daly Field – Williamsburg, Va.
  • The Short Story: In its only exhibition of the fall, the VCU women's soccer team battled perennial in-state power William & Mary to a scoreless draw. Senior Emma Kruse tallied six saves in just under 80 minutes of action. The depth of VCU was obvious with 23 different Rams playing in the contest.
How It Happened
  • Possession was back and forth to start the contest, but the first half's best chance came in the final five minutes when Stephanie Stahl broke up a W&M corner and quickly countered, finding Kailyn Slade streaking up the left side of the field. Slade found classmate Gabby Dyer, who's point blank shot was turned away to keep the game 0-0 at the break.
  • In the second half, Sharon Wojcik's free kick found Maddi Santo's head, but the header was blocked by a Tribe defender.
  • In the 69th minute Julia Suarez sped down the right sideline and delivered a cross that was just off the mark of a Slade, who was all by herself in the box.
  • VCU's final chance came in the 80th minute when Nicole Malancone fed Isabella Muzo, but Muzo's shot was turned away.
Up Next
  • VCU opens up the 2015 regular season on Friday against another in-state rival, Old Dominion. The Rams and Monarchs kick-off at 7 p.m. at SportsBackers.
