VCU Wins Dallas Regional, Advances to Super Regional for First Time Ever

Box Score

The Basics

  • Score: VCU 3, Dallas Baptist 1
  • Records: VCU (40-23), Dallas Baptist (46-15)
  • Location: Horner Ballpark – Dallas, Texas
  • The Short Story: With a 3-1 win over Dallas Baptist, VCU advances to a Super Regional for the first time in program history. The Rams become just the fifth #4 seed ever to win a regional.

How It Happened

  • After losing just hours prior, VCU collected itself and came back to score two early runs in the second inning to take the first lead. James Bunn was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to bring in the first run and Cody Acker's groundout to second base drove in the second.
  • Dallas Baptist answered in the bottom of the fourth and got a run back on a fielder's choice to second base.
  • Freshman Sean Thompson took the bump for the Rams and pitched extremely well, throwing 5.1 innings while allowing just one run, three hits and one walk while striking out four. He did it all very effectively as well, tossing just 62 pitches.
  • Coming in to relieve him was Matt Lees, who made his second appearance of the day and the 120th of his career, setting a new VCU career record in that category.
  • In the bottom of the sixth, Acker grounded out to second again, and again brought in a run to put the score at 3-1.
  • Lees was masterful on the mound today, going 3.2 innings while only allowing one baserunner en route to the Rams' historic 3-1 victory.
