THE BASICS: Vimael Machin's ninth inning home run was too little too late for the Rams in Saturday's 3-2 loss to Saint Louis. VCU's frustrating offensive weekend continued, with the Rams mustering just four hits on the afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Saint Louis struck first again on Saturday, plating the game's first run in the bottom of the second inning. It could have been worse, though, seeing as the Billikens notched six hits in the game's first two innings.
- The Rams responded in the top of the fourth when James Bunn singled through the right side to drive in their first run of the day.
- After 5.1 solid innings, Matt Lees came in to replace JoJo Howie and immediately induced a big double play to end the inning and get the Rams out of trouble. It was the third double play of the afternoon for the VCU defense.
- In the bottom of the seventh the Billikens did get another run on a bases loaded sacrifice fly to go ahead 3-1.
- Vimael Machin launched a solo home run in the top of the ninth to pull VCU within one, 3-2, however that would hold as the final score.
UP NEXT: The series finale of this weekend series with the Billikens will be tomorrow, Sunday, at 12 CT.
