THE BASICS: Heath Dwyer and Daniel Concepcion came up big on Sunday to shut down Rhode Island and help lead VCU to a 7-0 victory in the series finale. Matt Davis' three hits and Logan Farrar's home run led the way on offense for the Rams, who cap off a three-win week with the victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The good Rams got on the scoreboard first today when Daane Berezo lined a single into left field to bring in Matt Davis, though a base running blunder ended the inning prematurely.
- Walker Haymaker drove in the second run on a long fly ball to centerfield that scored Davis again and gave VCU a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning
- Another run came in to score in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI single by Haymaker.
- Starter Heath Dwyer turned in another great Sunday performance, tossing 5.2 innings of shutout baseball while striking out six and not walking anybody.
- Davis broke the game open further in the seventh inning with a two-run single to right field; the second run came in via a Rhode Island throwing error.
- In the bottom of the eighth Logan Farrar added a long two-run home run for good measure to put the Rams up 7-0 which would hold as the final score.
QUOTABLE: "Great win today. Obviously the series didn't go the way we wanted it to but it was huge to come out of here with a win today, especially after a tough loss yesterday. Heath Dwyer, again, was outstanding for us on a Sunday, throwing up zeros for us early in the game so we were able to expand our lead. Then Danny came in and expanded on that and we were really able to take advantage of it. Great job by our guys, we didn't have any errors the whole day and obviously we had the big days from Matt Davis and Logan gave us the home run. Great three-win week for the guys and now we have to be ready to go against Norfolk State and on the road against Saint Louis for a big conference weekend." –Head coach Shawn Stiffler
UP NEXT: VCU will host Norfolk State at the Diamond this Wednesday.
