THE BASICS: For the second game in a row VCU defeated #21 Maryland, this time by a score of 3-1. The story of the game was on the mound where Ben Stine, Thomas Gill, and Daniel Concepcion baffled Maryland hitters all night, allowing just six hits against the potent Terrapin offense. At the plate Cody Acker had a 3-hit game while Brett Hileman, Mitchel Lacey, and Daane Berezo all had multi-hit efforts as well.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- VCU grabbed an early lead in the top of the second inning after Daane Berezo singled up the middle off the pitcher's glove and brought in Shane Dressler to score.
- In the top of the fourth Mitchel Lacey scored on a bases loaded wild pitch to give the Rams a 2-0 lead.
- Ben Stine, making just his second start of his VCU career, pitched about as well as the Rams could have hoped, tossing five shutout innings against a very good Maryland offense.
- Logan Farrar singled to left field in the top of the eighth to drive in Berezo and give VCU a 3-0 lead.
- Maryland responded in the bottom of the eighth with a single up the middle that scored a runner from second base, putting the score at 3-1.
- Thomas Gill and Daniel Concepcion game in out of the bullpen and continued to shut down the Terrapins en route to a 3-1 victory for the Rams.
UP NEXT: The Rams will play host to Rhode Island this weekend, though all three games will be played at Randolph-Macon College.
