THE BASICS: It may have been scheduled at the last minute, but the Rams came ready to play on Wednesday evening in the team's 11-5 win over Longwood, the team's 20th win of the season. Sean Thompson threw six strong innings in the victory and both Logan Farrar and Cody Acker collected three hits on the offensive side.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Rams didn't wait long to get on the board, scoring in the top of the first on a two-out bunt single by Vimael Machin that allowed Logan Farrar to score.
- In the bottom of the second Longwood answered back with a solo home run to left field. The Lancers would get two more runs in the inning on consecutive groundouts to second base that allowed a runner to score from third.
- VCU tacked on seven runs in the top of the fourth to take a 9-3 lead. The Rams batted around in the inning and took advantage of several Longwood defensive miscues.
- Another run came in to score in the top of the fifth on a fielder's choice to second base, securing the sixth double-digit run total of the season for the Rams.
- Aside from the problematic second inning, Sean Thompson pitched incredibly well, allowing no runs and just two hits outside of that inning.
- Another run was tacked on in the top of the ninth thanks to a bases loaded walk with Machin at the plate. It would be the final run scored in VCU's 11-5 victory.
QUOTABLE: "Well we were fortunate enough to play our midweek game this week with all of the rain here the last couple of days, so it was great to get out and obviously great to win. Sean Thompson did a great job of settling down in the middle part of the game and letting our offense get back in a rhythm and take advantage of some of their miscues. Definitely excited about the way we came out, ready to swing the bats especially in the middle part of the order. I thought we did a really nice job of extending counts and forcing Longwood into a situation where we got some free base runners. We've got a conference weekend this weekend so we have to be ready to go and ready to play." -Head Coach Shawn Stiffler
UP NEXT: The Rams travel to Philadelphia for a three-game set with Saint Joseph's this weekend, with first pitch on Friday slated for 3 pm.
