THE BASICS: Despite a late rally VCU fell to George Mason 7-6 on Sunday night. Four Rams collected multiple hits and three Ram pitchers went at least 2.2 innings in the losing effort.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Rams were the first ones to get on the board this evening when James Bunn tripled to right field to drive in a run in the bottom of the second. Daane Berezo singled in another run in the inning.
- George Mason responded by scoring three runs in the very next frame, but VCU would respond in the bottom of the third with a run of its own. Vimael Machin was able to score on a Matt Davis single thanks to an errant GMU throw that found its way out of play, forcing Machin to the plate.
- The Patriots added two more runs in the top of the fifth, capitalizing on a VCU throwing error.
- Logan Farrar's RBI double in the bottom of the fifth would cut the Rams' deficit in half, 5-4. In their next trip to the plate, however, the Patriots would tack on two more runs to go up 7-4.
- VCU wouldn't go down easy though; the Rams scored two, two-out runs in the bottom of the ninth thanks to an RBI triple by Machin and a single into centerfield by Davis. It wouldn't be enough though as they would fall 7-6 and drop the weekend series.
QUOTABLE: "That's a bad loss, it's tough to lose that series at home. That's not what we were looking for. We just couldn't get any momentum, any time we would score a run we just couldn't keep that going defensively. Too many of their leadoff guys got on base and we gave up too many free bases, and that all came back to hurt us at the end of the game. But it's a new week coming up, we have a bunch of road games here coming up and we've got to be ready to go." -Head Coach Shawn Stiffler
