The Short Story: Sophomore Justin Tillman scored a career-high 18 points for VCU and senior Melvin Johnson added 17, but Georgia Tech pulled away from the Rams in the second half on the way to a 77-64 victory at McCamish Pavilion Tuesday night.
OPENING TIP
- The game featured seven ties and nine lead changes, but Georgia Tech used a 12-2 burst midway through the second half that included four points from Adam Smith to assume control at 61-50 with 6:05 left.
- Tillman scored 12 of his 18 in the second half and finished with four rebounds for the Rams. He was 6-of-10 from the field and 6-of-6 from the line.
- Johnson scored 11 of his points in the first half as the teams battled to a 27-27 tie at intermission.
- Mo Alie-Cox added four points, seven rebounds and three blocks for VCU.
- The Yellow Jackets' Marcus Georges-Hunt led all scorers with 20 points. Charles Mitchell also provided his ninth consecutive double-double for Georgia Tech.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Neither team shot well in the first half, but Georgia Tech knocked down 53 percent (15-of-28) of its attempts from the field in the second. The Yellow Jackets were also 24-of-26 at the line in the game. VCU, meanwhile, shot 32 percent (23-of-71) from the field on the night and was 6-of-27 from 3-point range.
- The Rams grabbed a 32-29 lead early in the second half on a Johnson three. A 5-0 burst a short time later pushed Tech ahead 39-34 with 15:02 left. The Yellow Jackets led by as many as nine, at 45-36 with 13:07 left before VCU steadied itself.
- VCU climbed back to within 49-48 with 10:14 remaining behind an 11-4 run, sparked by two Doug Brooks 3-pointers and a pair of Tillman jumpers. But the Rams were unable to retake the lead.

- Johnson, who has knocked down a three in 15 consecutive games, moved into a tie with Joey Rodriguez for fourth on VCU's career 3-pointers list with 211.
- VCU finished 12-of-12 at the line, the team's first perfect game (min 5 makes) at the line in nearly three years.
