The Short Story: Behind a late goal from junior Jorge Herranz, the VCU men's soccer team opened the Atlantic 10 Conference slate with a 1-1 draw at George Mason on Saturday night.
How It Happened
- In the opening minutes, Simond Kargbo fired a shot, looking to give the Rams an early lead, but he missed just wide.
- The Rams looked to take a lead behind a free kick taken by Dennis Castillo in the 17th minute, but the Mason keeper was there to make the stop.
- Despite VCU maintaining possession through much of the first half, Mason got on the board behind a goal from Matt Tucker in the 30th minute.
- After the break, VCU continued to battle and in the opening minutes of the half, Rafael Andrade Santos looked to tie it up, but the Mason defense was there to stifle the opportunity.
- The Patriots looked to extend their lead in the 60th minute, but Pierre Gardan came up with a big save
- With 15 minutes left in regulation, Jason McGlothern looked to find the back of the net with a header off a cross from Santos, but the Patriots' keeper was there with the save.
- In the 78th minute, Cody Sweatte fired a shot, but it sailed just high.
- Herranz came up huge with the equalizer in the 85th minute off an assist from Kargbo. The late goal sent the game to extra time.
- The Rams controlled both overtime periods. Dakota Barnathan hit the cross bar with his shot in the 95th minute, resulting in a series of corner kicks where VCU looked for the golden goal.
- In the 108th minute, Greg Boehme sent a shot just over the cross bar, as the Rams ended the Atlantic 10 Conference opener in a 1-1 draw.
