The Short Story: The VCU Men's Soccer team dropped a heartbreaker to George Washington in overtime on Saturday night.
How It Happened:
- VCU looked for an early lead with a pair of shots from Cody Sweatte in the 11th minute, but both were unable to find the back of the net. Minutes later, Brandon Eaton fired a shot, but the ball grazed the crossbar.
- Pierre Gardan made an great save to stop GW's Koby Osei-Wusu's shot from giving the Colonials a lead.
- With about a minute left in the first half, a pass from Jack Bates found it's way to Greg Boehme, but his header just missed high.
- Dakota Barnathan found the back of the net off a rebound in the 68th minute, but the goal was reversed when the officials called off sides.
- Both teams continued to battle firing shots, but were unable to close out the game in regulation.
- Three minutes into overtime, an own goal gave GW the 1-0 win.
Noteworthy:
- Gardan registered five saves in the match, which matches his career-best.
- This was VCU's sixth overtime game of the season to be decided in extra time.
