The Short Story: Freshman Emily McNamara scored in the 65th minute to lead a late VCU push, but the Rams were unable to overcome two early La Salle goals Sunday at Cary Street Field.
How it Happened
- La Salle wasted little time. Jenica Miller collected a rebound in the third minute and punched it into the cage for the Explorers' first score.
- The Explorers expanded their lead at the 8:57 mark on a perfectly executed penalty corner that saw Megan Kida score from atop the circle.
- McNamara brought the Rams to within striking distance in the 65th minute, when she took a through ball from Jamee Albright on a 2-on-1 breakaway and slipped a shot past the La Salle keeper from 12 yards out into the far left corner.
- VCU generated a handful of other chances in the waning moments, including a diving shot by senior Taleah Scott in the 69th minute that was knocked down by La Salle keeper Rachel Hartman as she tumbled to the turf.
- La Salle controlled much of the action in the first half and owned a 14-4 advantage in shots in the period. But in the second, the Rams outshot the Explorers 8-7.
