RAMS DROP 3-1 DECISION AT LONGWOOD

Box Score

The Basics

  • Score: Longwood 3, VCU 1
  • Records: VCU (1-2), Longwood (2-2)
  • Location: Longwood Athletics Complex – Farmville, Va.
  • The Short Story: Despite outshooting their opposition, the VCU Field Hockey team dropped a tough road decision to in-state rival Longwood, 2-1. Senior Kendell Combs scored her first goal off the season for the Rams, who rattled off nine shots on the goals on the day.
How It Happened
  • Longwood got on the board early when Jennifer Burris finished a corner in the sixth minute to put the Lancers up, 1-0.
  • VCU would pressure Longwood, forcing the Lancers' keeper to make five first half saves.
  • Sophomore Alexis Schramm nearly even the score just before half, but her shot bounced off the post as Longwood held a 1-0 lead at the break.
  • Less than a minute into the second half, Combs took a pass from freshman Spencer Tossone and deposited it into the back of the cage to even the score at 1-1.
  • Just under four minutes later, Longwood's Abbey Ripley scored to regain the lead in favor of the Lancers.
  • VCU would continue to pressure the LU defense, but a Lancer goal with under three minutes to play would seal the Rams' fate.
Quotable
  • "Games against Longwood are traditionally very tough matches. Today's game was nothing different to that. We made simple errors that caused us to lower our level of play. This week we will need to focus on raising our standards of play and focusing on making ourselves better every single day." - Head Coach Laura Baker

Up Next
