  • Records: VCU (3-4-1) NMU (5-1-1)
  • The Short Story: Facing one of the best teams in the country in one of the toughest environments in the country proved to be a little too tough as the VCU men's soccer team fell to fourth-ranked New Mexico, 2-0, in the final game of its four-game road swing. Juan Fajardo Ortiz and Ritchie Duffie were named to the New Mexico Invitational's All-Tournament Team.

How it Happened:

  • New Mexico's Niko Hansen scored the first goal of the game after a turnover in the middle of the field, putting his team up 1-0 in the 17th minute.
  • Chris Wehan scored the other goal for the Lobos in the 74th minute when he also capitalized off of a VCU turnover in the open field.
  • The Rams were outshot 13-4 in the second half of the game, and senior Mario Herrera Meraz registered VCU's only shot on goal on the night.
  • VCU really held its own at the New Mexico Invitational, leaving Albuquerque with a record of 0-1-1, with the loss coming to one of the best teams in the country.

Up Next:

  • The Rams return home this Friday, September 26 to face Old Dominion at 7 pm. After that they'll hit the road again, this time to South Bend to face the fifth-ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish. After that VCU will open up Atlantic 10 play with #18 George Mason at home on Saturday, October 4 at 7 pm. The following Wednesday the Rams will round out their non-conference schedule with a trip to Maryland to play the Terrapins.
