Short Story: VCU fell to Richmond 1-0 in a crosstown battle Friday night in the Rams' home opener. UofR's Rebecca Barry scored the golden goal two minutes into the overtime period.

How It Happened
  • The first half was a defensive battle. Both teams struggled to create offensive opportunities.
  • In the second half, senior Kendell Combs had a shot off the corner from Spencer Tossone that was just wide.
  • Minutes later, senior defender Kacie Yang's shot off a corner went wide as well.
  • Richmond's Rebecca Barry scored the golden goal in the 72nd minute to give the Spiders the 1-0 win.

Quotable

  • "Today's game was a great battle by both teams," said head coach Laura Baker. "It was a high paced, back-and-forth game and both teams had chances to finish the game in regular time. To lose in overtime is always tough but we also have to focus on the improvements that we made between last weekend and this game. We look forward to playing at home again next week in two more important opponents."

Up Next

  • VCU remains home at Cary Street Field for two matches next weekend. The Rams will host James Madison on Friday, Sept. 26 at 3:00pm, and Massachusetts on Sunday, Sept. 28 at 12:00pm.
