VCU Drops a Close One to #15 Virginia, 1-0

Box Score

The Basics

  • Score: VCU 0, #15 Virginia 1
  • Records: VCU (3-3-0), UVA (4-1-0)
  • The Short Story: A Virginia goal in the 75th minute was the deciding factor as the Rams left Charlottesville with a 1-0 defeat at the hands of the Cavaliers.

How it Happened:

  • Virginia's Sam Hayward scored the only goal of the game, heading it in off of a cross in what ended up being the game's only goal.
  • Despite conceding its lone goal in the second half, it's inarguable that VCU played better after halftime. In the first 45 minutes, the Rams were outshot 9-0, with three of the Cavaliers' shots being on goal. In the second half, though, VCU tallied 13 shots to Virginia's three, and more than doubled UVA's shots on goal (five to two).

Quotable:

  • "In what was a tale of two halves, we conceded during the half that we were much better. That was disappointing, but just as we have seen so far this season, the team who takes their chances when they create them, wins soccer games. Tonight and against UNC we created several good chances and didn't take any. Against Georgetown, we only created a few and scored two of them.  We just played three top 10 teams in a row and have learned a lot about our group. This weekend, we'll see another pair of NCAA tournament teams including one of the preseason favorites to win it all in New Mexico. First up though is Bakersfield who is off to a great start and is going to present us with a ton of challenges. I think we are all looking forward to getting back on the field ASAP." –head coach Dave Giffard

Up Next:

  • This upcoming weekend, VCU travels way down to Albuquerque to take on CSU Bakersfield and another top-10 team, the New Mexico Lobos. Those games will take place Friday, September 19 and Sunday, September 21, respectively.
