THE BASICS
  • VCU, playing in its second match-up against a ranked opponent of the day, got 11 kills from freshman outside hitter Jessica Young in a loss to host and 17th-ranked North Carolina.
  • For her efforts, Young was named to the All-Tournament Team.
  • Senior setter Cecilia Aragao turned in another all-around effort with 25 assists, 14 digs, five kills and four blocks for the Rams, while classmate Janelle Sykes added seven kills and three blocks.
  • Lauren McAdoo sparked the North Carolina attack with 11 kills. Beth Nordhorn also proved to be a thorn in VCU's side with eight kills in nine attempts and five blocks.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Tar Heels jumped out to a 1-0 lead on the strength of a .353 hitting performance in the first set and never looked back.
  • VCU nearly grabbed the equalizer in set two. Three kills down the stretch by Sykes pushed the Rams into a 25-all tie with UNC. However, a short time later, a kill by North Carolina's Tatiana Durr clinched a 28-26 win for the hosts.
  • UNC hit .287 for the match and committed just 14 attacking errors on the night.
QUOTABLE FROM COACH JODY ROGERS
"Losing's tough, but now it's time for us to refocus on getting back to winning. We'll turn our attention to this weekend and to doing what we need to do to get on the winning track. Jessica Young made the All-Tournament team, which is huge for her. She really made strides this week."
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • It was the third straight solid match for Young this weekend. The Mesa, Arizona native also spiked nine kills and hit .217 earlier in the day against 16th-ranked Kentucky.
  • For the weekend, Young averaged 3.1 kills per set and hit .221 in three matches.
WHAT'S NEXT
The Rams return to Richmond, they it will open the home portion of their schedule against Virginia, Ball State and East Tennessee State in the VCU Invitational Sept. 19-20 at the Siegel Center.
