Castillo's PK Goal Not Enough, Rams Fall 2-1 to ETSU

Box Score

The Basics

  • Score: VCU 1, East Tennessee State 2
  • Records: VCU (1-1-0), ETSU (2-0-0)
  • Location: VCU's SportsBackers Stadium inside HDL, Inc. Athletic Village - Richmond, Va.
  • The Short Story: Despite controlling possession for the majority of the game, the VCU men's soccer team took a tough 2-1 loss on Sunday afternoon to a pesky squad from ETSU. Junior Dennis Castillo converted a penalty shot late in the second half, but the Rams were unable to come up with any chances after having 16 corner kicks on the night.

How it Happened:

  • ETSU's Joao Ramalho scored the first of his two goals on the afternoon in the 15th minute, putting it past Garrett Cyprus for his third goal of the season.
  • In the 60th minute, Ramalho lined up for a free kick and placed it in the lower right corner of the net for his second goal of the game, putting the Bucs up 2-0.
  • Castillo scored on his penalty kick attempt in the 86th minute to cut the deficit in half, but it was too little too late and the Rams ended up on the wrong side of the 2-1 decision.
  • Despite the score, VCU was not without chances. The Rams ended the day with 16 corner kicks, compared to ETSU's one.

Quotables:

  • "Credit ETSU for playing a very good game. They are a well organized hard working team and deserved the result." - Head Coach Dave Giffard
  • "For us, it was a very disappointing performance, which led to a very disappointing result.  Our mental energy and effort was not what is required against quality teams on a hot and sunny Sunday afternoon. To take 16 corner kicks and only get 2 shots on goal, tells me that one team defended very well, and one team didn't give the requisite fight and movement in a packed final third." - Head Coach Dave Giffard
  • "We then conceded 2 goals on 3 shots. Simply put, not good enough and welcome to the grind that is college soccer.  Time to get to work and improve this week." - Head Coach Dave Giffard

Up Next:

  • VCU will host Northeastern on Friday, September 5 at 7:30 p.m. as the second game of a double-header with the women's squad before hosting nationally-ranked North Carolina on Sunday, September 7 at 7 p.m.
