Rams Fall on Senior Night to #12 Saint Louis, 1-0

Box Score

The Basics

  • Score: VCU 0, #12 Saint Louis 1
  • Records: VCU (7-8-4, 4-1-3 A-10), SLU (12-3-2, 5-1-2 A-10)
  • The Short Story: A second half free kick was the difference in tonight's game and VCU fell to highly-ranked Saint Louis 1-0.

How it Happened:

  • Though the Billikens registered two shots on goal in the first period, neither chance was especially challenging. The Rams weren't able to muster any legitimate scoring chances in the first half either, and both teams entered halftime with four shots.
  • SLU's goal came in the 74th minute on a free kick by Robert Kristo. Taken about 10 yards outside of the box, Kristo rocketed his shot towards the far post and easily found the back of the net to put the Billikens up 1-0.
  • The second half was much more productive for both teams in terms of producing scoring chances. Perhaps the best chance for VCU came off of a corner, and a flurry of activity around the net ended with a header from forward Jose Manel that just nicked the crossbar and went out.

Quotable:

  • "Tonight was a tough result to swallow. I thought we were very good in many areas of the game, but didn't score the chances we created. Give SLU a ton of credit, they are very dangerous on any set piece and they are a seasoned experienced group that gives very little away. Now we have to prepare for next week's tournament." -Head coach Dave Giffard

Up Next:

  • This game concluded the regular season for the Rams. The Atlantic 10 Tournament begins Thursday, November 13 and will be played entirely at Sports Backers Stadium. Though the opponent is still yet to be determined, VCU will play at 8 PM that night in the final of four opening round matches.
