RAMS FALL TO FORDHAM IN PKS IN A10 QUARTERFINALS

Box Score

The Basics
Score: VCU 0, Fordham 0 (Fordham 5-3 PKs)
Records: VCU (7-8-5), Fordham (6-8-4)
The Short Story: Friday night's quarterfinal match came down to penalty kicks, which gave Fordham a 5-3 advantage and the chance to advance to tomorrow night's Atlantic 10 semifinal game.

How it Happened:
  • VCU controlled much of the game and manufactured several opportunities, but the ball never fell in the net. Fordham also chances in regulation, but had no luck getting the ball by the Ram defense or goalkeeper Garrett Cyprus.
  • In both overtime periods, the Rams had six shots compared to Fordham's one.
  • After two rounds of penalty kicks, VCU and Fordham were tied at 2-2, but it was the third round the Rams fell behind. Fordham was able to send the ball into pockets of the net to take a 5-3 advantage in PK's and advance to the Atlantic 10 semifinals.
Quotable:
"First of all, I want to start by saying congrats to Fordham and good luck to them tomorrow against SLU. I'm very proud of our seniors and appreciate all that they have done for this team and for our program," said head coach Dave Giffard

"As it relates to the game, I thought it was a microcosm of the season. We created a ton of good chances and played very well and controlled the game, but couldn't find the back of the net. Soccer is a funny game sometimes and this year, for whatever reason, the ball just didn't want to make it's way into the back of the net. We'll take a few days and then get back to work as we begin the building process for 2015," said Giffard.
