Manel's Goal Helps Rams Topple the Dukes, 1-0

Box Score

The Basics

  • Score: VCU 1, Duquesne 0
  • Records: VCU (5-7-4, 2-0-3 A-10), DUQ (6-5-2, 1-2-0 A-10)
  • The Short Story: An early goal helped propel the Rams to a 1-0 victory over Duquesne to stay undefeated in conference play.

How it Happened:

  • Senior Jose Manel scored the lone goal of the match in the fifth minute, his fourth goal of the season, tying him with senior Kharlton Belmar for the team lead. Senior Mario Herrera Meraz was credited with an assist, his fourth.
  • The box score may show that Duquesne doubled VCU's shots on goal total, however the reality was that the Dukes only mustered one true scoring chance. Duquesne was afforded a penalty kick via a VCU handball, but junior goalkeeper Garrett Cyprus made a nice save to keep the clean sheet in tact.
  • Duquesne boasts quite the home-field advantage; tonight's victory by VCU was just the second by a visiting team on the Dukes' home pitch in the last two seasons.

Quotable:

  • "I thought it was a solid professional win on the road against a good team who is very tough at home.  At the end of the game, they created a lot of havoc in and around our back line, but we dealt with it and got the result.  In one of the moments of havoc, they created a handball and a PK, but Cypress came up with a big save and we saw the game out.  For all of the times the ball bounced against us this year, it deservedly bounced our way tonight." –Head coach Dave Giffard

Up Next:

  • The Rams will face St. Bonaventure on the road this Sunday, October 26 at 1 pm. They will then travel to George Washington and play the Colonials on Sunday, November 2 in another afternoon matchup. VCU will then return home for its regular season finale on November 7 to play Saint Louis at 7 pm.
