RAMS BATTLE FORDHAM TO SCORELESS TIE

Box Score

The Basics

  • Score: VCU 0, Fordham 0
  • Records: VCU (4-7-3, 1-0-2 A10), Fordham (5-6-2, 2-1-1)
  • Location: VCU's Sports Backers Stadium inside the HDL, Inc. Athletic Village
  • The Short Story: The VCU men's soccer team remained one of just four unbeaten teams in Atlantic 10 play, battling Fordham to a 0-0 tie at Sports Backers Stadium on Friday night. Despite pressuring the Fordham defense all night long, the VCU men's soccer team was unable to break through on the scoresheet. The Rams tallied 21 shots and 12 corners on the evening. VCU has allowed just one goal in three conference games this season.
How It Happened
  • VCU's pressure was started early and continued throughout the 110 minutes. Senior Jose Manel got loose in the 11th minute and fired a shot that went just wide of the net.
  • Manel struck again in the 31st minute, but Fordham's Sean Brailey was able to come up with the save.
  • Senior Ritchie Duffie forced Brailey into a diving save in the 64th minute.
  • Junior defender Dennis Castillo nearly came up with late game heroics as his header in the 86th minute was just tapped away by Brailey.
  • Perhaps VCU's best chance came as time was expiring in the first overtime. Off a corner, Brandon Eaton gathered a loose ball and fired a shot from just outside the box, but Brailey once again game up with the save to keep it scoreless.
  • Junior Garrett Cyprus tallied his fourth career shutout in goal for the Black & Gold.
Quotable
  • "I thought our performance improved from last weekend.  We created numerous good chances to score, but couldn't seem to find the back of the net. What improved though, was we gave much less away in transition and limited Fordham to 1 shot on goal. We have to keep continuing to improve as the a10 season continues and if we do, this group will be there in the end." - Head Coach Dave Giffard
