sophomore Kristin
Boyd (Wilmington, N.C.) had eight kills carry Virginia
Commonwealth University past Seton Hall, 3-0 (25-22, 27-25, 25-17)
Saturday at the Hampton Inn Classic at Penn State's Rec Hall.
VCU (1-5) hit .265 for the match and was over .200 in each of
the three sets. The Rams out blocked the Pirates (1-4) 10-3 and
forced Seton Hall to hit just .127 for the match.
Boyd came off the bench and hit .278 to bolster the Rams' attack.
Boyd had her eight kills in her final 13 attempts. Senior Mariel Frey
added 10 kills and three blocks for VCU, while sophomore libero
Marisa Low
(Carlsbad, Calif.) contributed 18 digs. Low had 10 digs in
the first set alone as Seton Hall hit .102.
Sarah Osmun led all players with 18 kills for the Pirates.
Seton Hall nearly got back in the match during the second set,
when back-to-back service aces by Megan Murison highlighted an 8-0
run to give the Pirates a 23-21 lead. Kills by senior Kelsie
Clegg (Boise, Idaho) and freshman Ciara Brown
(Fort Myers, Fla.) helped VCU tie the frame at 24-24.
After trading points, VCU used a stout defensive effort, including
a one-armed dig by Low, to force a pair of Seton Hall errors and
capture a 27-25 win.
VCU returns to action later on Saturday evening when it meets
top-ranked Penn State at 7 p.m.
