Box Score
RICHMOND, Va. – This is the one that got away.
Despite 17 kills by senior Mariel Frey
(Lititz, Pa.), Georgetown rallied to stun Virginia
Commonwealth University in its home opener, 3-2 (25-23, 22-25,
22-25, 25-20, 15-9) Tuesday at the Verizon Wireless Arena at the
Stuart C. Siegel Center.
Frey hit .277 to lead the Rams and added nine digs and three
blocks. VCU (1-10) also received 21 digs from sophomore libero
Marisa Low
(Carlsbad, Calif.), as well as seven kills and seven
blocks from senior Kelsie
Clegg (Boise, Idaho).
Lindsay Wise led all players with 19 kills and hit .419 for the
Hoyas (7-5), while Georgetown setter Ashley Malone dished out 58
assists.
With the match even at two sets apiece, the Hoyas hit .375 in the
fifth and deciding set, while the Rams struggled to an .048 hitting
mark. Powered by a Brooke Bachesta kill and a service ace by
Samantha Trauth, the Hoyas grabbed a 3-0 lead in the tiebreaker and
never trailed. VCU pulled within 10-8, but kills by Trauth and
Annalee Abell, as well as a Whitney Jencks ace, doomed the Black
and Gold.
VCU looked crisp in the second and third sets, when it hit .400
and .444, respectively, on the way to a 2-1 lead. The Rams appeared
on the road to a win, but Wise blasted six kills and hit .364 to
spark a 25-20 triumph in the fourth set.
The Rams, who have played nine of their first 10 matches away from
the Siegel Center, hit the road for a four-match swing to Fort
Collins and Denver, Colo. VCU will face 14th-ranked
Colorado State Thursday at 9 p.m. in Fort Collins. The following
day, it will take on No. 24 Long Beach State before heading to
Denver for a pair of Saturday matches.
