Box Score RICHMOND, Va. – All nine Virginia
Commonwealth University starters recorded at least one hit and the
Rams snapped a seven-game losing streak with a 10-4 victory against
Longwood University Wednesday evening at The Diamond.
VCU improves to 10-10 on the season, while
Longwood falls to 9-9.
Sophomore first baseman Brent
Mikionis collected a game-high four hits, while senior
M.L. Morgan and sophomores Paul
Nice and Taylor Perkins registered two
hits apiece for VCU.
Meanwhile, Phil Cerreto and Robby Newman combined
to record four of Longwood's seven hits on the night.
Redshirt-sophomore Michael
Graham, who picked up his third win of the year, tossed
five innings and allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits.
He also finished with three strikeouts and no walks. Longwood
starter Chris Briere surrendered six runs on 11 hits and suffered
his third loss of the season.
VCU wasted little time getting on the board as
the Rams plated a run in the bottom of the first. Morgan led
off the frame with a single to right field and advanced to third
following a one-out hit by Mikionis. Morgan later scored on a
wild pitch and gave the Black & Gold a 1-0 lead.
Newman evened the score with a solo home run in
the third but VCU answered with a pair of runs on three hits in the
bottom half of the inning and regained the lead for good.
Newman again came through for Longwood in the top
of the fifth as he laced an RBI double into right field and pulled
the Lancers within 3-2. However, VCU answered with three runs
in the bottom of the frame as Nice and John
Lenherr each scored on an error before Matt
Leskiw came home on a wild pitch, giving the Rams a
four-run lead.
Longwood answered VCU's scoring spurt for the
second straight time in the sixth. Shortstop Scott Kimble
ripped a one-out offering over the left field wall for his first
home run of the season before Brant Jones scored on an infield
single to cut the lead to 6-4.
Mikionis collected his fourth hit of the night to
begin the seventh inning and later scored on a Leskiw single.
Nice then came home for the second time on a passed ball and the
Rams increased their lead to 8-4.
VCU added two more insurance runs in the bottom
of the eighth thanks to a pair of Longwood errors.
The Rams are set to begin Colonial Athletic Association play
when they host Northeastern for a three-game series beginning
Friday at 7 p.m., at The Diamond.
