RICHMOND, Va. – Senior C.J.
Gehin-Scott (pictured, right) scored in the 37th
minute and freshman Jason
Johnson added an insurance goal late as Virginia
Commonwealth University posted its seventh shutout of the season
with a 1-0 victory against Drexel on Saturday evening at Sports
Backers Stadium.
With the victory, VCU improves to 6-2-6 overall with a 3-1-4
mark in Colonial Athletic Association play. Meanwhile, Drexel
falls to 7-7-1, 3-5-0 in league action.
"Tonight was a very strong team effort against a very good
Drexel team," said VCU Head Coach Dave
Giffard. "I thought we attacked very well throughout
the night and worked very hard defensively. We made
individual plays when they were needed and earned a hard fought
three points. Now the attention turns to UNC on Tuesday and a
chance to play against one of the most talented and well coached
teams in all of college soccer."
Drexel was on the attack early as VCU goalkeeper Josh
Pantazelos, who posted his second straight shutout, made a
save off the foot of Anthony Bafile just 30 seconds into the
match.
VCU pressured in the 15th minute when sophomore Yoram
Mwila fired back-to-back shots. His first attempt
was blocked but he grabbed his own rebound and fired it back,
however Drexel goalie Pentti Pussinen made the stop. Four
minutes later, senior Jake Van
Yahres nearly put the Rams on top as he lifted a shot
from the left wing into the box but it hit the cross bar.
Pantazelos came up with another save in the 25th minute when he
made a stop after a one-on-one in front of the net with Malcolm
LeBourne. He then made his third stop of the night on a long
strike by Nathan Page at the 28:01 mark.
Gehin-Scott eventually broke the scoreless tie in the 37th minute
when he lifted a deflection over Pussinen's head and VCU took a 1-0
lead. It was Gehin-Scott's sixth goal of the season.
In the 56th minute, Drexel's Manuel Cazares fired a low shot
from outside the 18' but Pantazelos was there for his fourth
save. Ten minutes later, VCU senior Luscas
Paulini blasted a 20-yard strike but it hit the crossbar
for the second time in the game.
The Rams continued to pressure and Johnson (pictured, right)
added an insurance goal in the 89th minute. Van Yahres sent a
pass through the middle of the box and Johnson slipped his fourth
goal of the season into the lower left of the net and VCU went
ahead 2-0.
Pantazelos finished the night with four saves in the net, while
Pussinen made five stops for the Dragons.
The Rams held a commanding 20-8 advantage in shots and a 5-4
margin in corner kicks.
VCU hosts Atlantic Coast Conference power University of North
Carolina in its home finale on Tuesday, Oct. 26 at 7 p.m., at
Sports Backers Stadium. The Rams then close out the regular
season with three-straight road matches.
