Box Score WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Virginia Commonwealth University
yielded a goal in the 63rd minute and couldn't overcome the second
half deficit on its way to a 1-0 loss against 20th-ranked William
& Mary on Saturday evening at Albert-Daly Field.
William & Mary snaps VCU's league-leading 10-match unbeaten
streak. The last time VCU lost was in its season-opening,
double overtime defeat against Florida Gulf Coast on Sept. 4.
The Rams were the last Colonial Athletic Association team to suffer
a loss in conference play.
VCU falls to 5-2-5 overall and 2-1-3 in the CAA, while first
place William & Mary improves to 9-2-1, 4-1-1.
"Tonight was a good game between two good teams that like to put
the ball down and play," said VCU Head Coach Dave
Giffard. "All credit to William & Mary, they
scored the goal and did what they had to do to get the
result. In tight games like tonight, the difference usually
comes down to a moment here and a moment there and tonight William
& Mary won more of those moments. Our season won't be
defined by tonight's game, though. At the end of the day what
happened was we let a good opportunity slip away and we have put
ourselves in a tougher spot than we needed to. All attention
now turns to Wednesday's game with a very good and seasoned UNC
Wilmington team."
Alan Koger fired three of William & Mary's six shots during
the first half but none of the Tribe looks were on frame.
Meanwhile, VCU posted two with one on target in the opening
period.
Senior C.J.
Gehin-Scott fired a point-blank strike with 17 minutes
to go in the first half but William & Mary goalkeeper Andrew
McAdams made a diving stop to keep the Rams off the board.
Three minutes later the VCU back line held strong and turned away
back-to-back shots in front of the net as Jimmy Carroll's attempt
was blocked and Koger followed with a bicycle kick that sailed high
of the target.
With less than six minutes to go before intermission,
Gehin-Scott tried to give VCU the lead but his shot drifted high of
the net and both squads played to a scoreless first half tie.
Freshman Jason
Johnson and Gehin-Scott each had looks on consecutive
VCU possessions in the 58th minute but both attempts went wide of
the post. Freshman Peter Lee then blasted a
strike two minutes later but it again went wide.
William & Mary eventually broke the scoreless tie in the
63rd minute. Nicholas Abrigo sent a pass from middle to a
streaking Krogar from the right wing, who then sent a shot past a
diving Gabriel
Rodriguez into the far post and the Tribe went ahead 1-0.
Nathaniel Baako tried to give the Tribe an insurance score with
10 minutes to play but his blast from the left wing went high of
the net.
William & Mary held a 14-8 advantage in shots, while VCU
held a 3-2 margin in corners.
VCU returns to Sports Backers Stadium for its final three home
matches of the season beginning with first-place UNC Wilmington on
Oct. 20. The Rams then welcome Drexel on Oct. 23 and
entertain ACC power North Carolina on Oct. 26. VCU then
closes out the regular season with three-straight road matches.
