Jeffrey Birchell

Jeff Birchell joined the VCU Sports Medicine staff in February 2024. He is assigned to manage and facilitate the health and wellness of VCU Baseball. As an American Red Cross CPR/AED instructor, he is also responsible for instructing CPR courses for the VCU Athletics Staff. Birchell works closely with the VCU Sports Performance staff and the baseball coaching staff to manage injury prevention, athletic recovery, corrective exercise implementation, and movement pattern screening. With extensive baseball experience and continuing education, Jeff focuses on player development through objective measures utilizing Trackman, video analytics, and clinical movement screenings to enhance pitcher development, performance and injury prevention.
 
Birchell comes to VCU from Florida International University in Miami, Fla., where he was the athletic trainer for FIU baseball for 3 years, implementing arm care routines and managing corrective exercise programs for the Panthers’ pitching staff. In addition to his baseball duties, he was also the Certified Medical Spotter for FIU football games. Birchell served as a clinical preceptor for the FIU Athletic Training Master’s program and enjoyed teaching and mentoring future athletic trainers.
 
Before FIU, Birchell was at Carroll College in Helena, Mont., for six years and was responsible for men’s soccer, men’s basketball, softball and golf. He was a part of the 2018 NAIA men’s basketball national runner-up team.
 
Birchell received his Master of Science degree in Kinesiology in 2016 from Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas, while serving as the graduate assistant athletic trainer for Lamar baseball during his enrollment.
 
A native of Oklahoma City, Okla., Birchell received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Athletic Training from Oklahoma State University in 2014.
 
Birchell maintains both state and national certifications as an Athletic Trainer, and holds certifications and licenses for Structure & Function Dry Needling (Level 1), NASM Corrective Exercise Specialist, IV administration and CPR/AED instruction.
 
When not serving the athletes of VCU baseball, you can find Jeff on the golf course, on a trail run or in a tent up in the mountains.
