BALANCED VCU OUTLASTS LA SALLE, CAPTURES 11TH STRAIGHT WIN

The short story: VCU used 14 blocks to power its way past La Salle to its 11th straight victory Sunday afternoon.

OPENING VOLLEY

  • Senior middle blocker Jasmin Sneed (San Antonio, Texas) supplied eight kills and eight blocks to lead the way for VCU
  • Senior outside hitter Vicky Giommarini (Rome, Italy) paced a balanced Black and Gold offense with a team-high nine kills. She added seven digs and two blocks
  • Senior middle Jaelyn Jackson (South Chesterfield, Va.) and junior outside hitter Paula Neciporuka (Kuldiga, Latvia) provided eight kills apiece for the Rams. Jackson also recorded five blocks, while Neciporuka hit .438 in the match
  • Samantha Graver led all players with 16 kills for La Salle

THE DIFFERENCE

  • VCU, the national leader in blocks per set, outblocked the Explorers 14-3
  • The Rams also outhit La Salle .203-.176
  • VCU escaped a wild first set that saw the Rams finally triumph after La Salle staved off set point five times. La Salle led 27-26 late in the frame, but back-to-back kills by Giommarini and Neciporuka swung the set into VCU's favor. Moments later, a kill by Jackson and a ball handling error gave the Rams the 31-29 win
  • The Rams fought off a La Salle set point in the second and used a double block by Jackson and Giommarini, as well as a service ace by sophomore setter Dani Jo David (Virginia Beach, Va.) to score a 26-24 win
