THE BASICS
  • VCU received an 18-kill, 10-dig double-double from junior outside hitter Kalah Jones, but it wasn't enough to overcome Atlantic 10 Conference leader Dayton Friday night at the Siegel Center.
  • Senior Uzoamaka Ibeh added nine kills and hit .200 for the Rams, while senior setter Cecilia Aragao was credited with 38 assists and 15 digs.
  • Freshman libero Rebekah Strange continued her recent solid play, contributing 16 digs to the VCU cause.
  • Dayton outhit the Rams .232 to .127 and outdug VCU 63-56.
  • Alaina Turner led Dayton with 12 kills, while Isolde Hannan hit .538 with eight kills and 10 blocks for the Flyers.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Dayton came out firing on all cylinders and rolled to a 25-10 win in the opening set. The Flyers hit .476 and served aggressively to keep the Rams on their heels.
  • VCU struck back quickly. The Rams hit .229 in the second set on the way to a 25-20 equalizer.
  • In the fourth, it looked as if VCU might send the match to a tiebreaker. The Rams held set point twice before the Flyers rallied for the win on three straight points. With the Rams ahead 26-25, Hannan spiked a kill. Then, following a service ace by Jane Emmenecker, Hannan combined with Jenna Jendryk on a match-clinching double block. The fourth set alone featured 11 ties and five lead changes.
QUOTABLE FROM COACH JODY ROGERS
  • "Once again, it comes down to that first ball for us. If we control that first ball, our offense had the opportunity to be that much more effective."
  • "Despite the slow start, I thought the girls really battled. We came back and were a play or two away from going to the tiebreaker. They never gave up."
  • "Our pin players, especially Kalah Jones and Uzoamaka Ibeh really made some plays for us tonight and kept us in the match because Dayton played the middle so well.
