RAMS FLATTEN LA SALLE IN WEEKEND OPENER

THE BASICS
  • VCU hit a season-high.392 and trailed just once all evening as it rumbled past La Salle 3-0 Friday night.
  • The Rams hit .632 in the first set alone and committed just nine attacking errors in the match.
  • Senior middle Janelle Sykes and freshman outside hitter Jessica Young provided eight kills apiece for the Rams. Sykes didn't commit an attacking error and hit .727 (8-0-11) in the match.
  • Senior setter Cecilia Aragao handed out 24 assists before giving way to sophomore Kaitlyn LaMantia early in the second set. Aragao added three kills, three blocks and five digs.
  • VCU served up a 2014-best 10 aces in the match, including four by freshman defensive specialist Rebekah Strange. Strange also provided six digs.
  • The Rams outblocked the Explorers 7-1 and outdug La Salle 35-24.
RAMS ON A ROLL
  • Since a 2-7 start against a schedule that included seven NCAA Tournament squads from 2013 – three of them ranked in the AVCA Top 25 – VCU has ripped of wins in seven of eight matches.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • In VCU 's last two matches with La Salle, the Explorers have failed to surpass 15 points in any set.
  • With 24 assists Friday, Aragao topped 3,500 for her career. Her 3,514 assists rank fifth in school history.
  • VCU has hit above .200 in eight consecutive matches.
WHAT'S NEXT
VCU will ready for a rematch of the 2013 Atlantic 10 Championship Match with Duquesne on Sunday, Oct. 12 at 1 p.m. at the Siegel Center. The Dukes defeated the Rams 3-1 in the A-10 final on Nov. 30 at George Washington's Smith Center.
