THE BASICS
  • Junior outside hitter Kalah Jones provided a team-high eight kills, while freshman libero Mary Kilbane dug 11 balls for VCU in its opening match of Ohio's Baymont Inn and Suites Invitational.
  • Senior middle Janelle Sykes hit .500 with six kills and a block for the Rams, who failed to gain momentum against the offensive-minded Hokies.
  • Virginia Tech hit .324 in the match, including .571 in the second set on the way to a 2-0 lead. Kathryn Caine spearheaded the Hokie attack with seven kills and a .417 hitting percentage.
  • VCU looked to dig out of the 2-0 hole in the third. The Rams grabbed a 9-8 lead following a kill by freshman Jessica Young. But Virginia Tech promptly embarked on an 8-0 run to take command of the frame.
  • Sophomore middle Nora Reed hit .333 with five kills an ace and a solo block for the Rams, while senior setter Cecilia Aragao handed out 18 assists.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Aragao moved her career assist total to 3,027 with 18 Friday. She is one of just five players in school history to reach 3,000 assists.
WHAT'S NEXT
VCU returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 6 at the Baymont Inn and Suites Invitational with a pair of matches. The Rams will take on the host Ohio Bobcats at noon before they meet Texas A&M at the nightcap.
